I have been using The Drama Notebook for a few weeks now and absolutely love it! I used to spend hours every week searching books, libraries, the internet for monologues and scripts suitable for young children. Living in Australia, where there is not a whole heap of acting bookshops, I found it near impossible to find enough kid friendly material. That is until I stumbled upon the Drama Notebook. My kids love the classes and monologues, and I can’t wait to get going on the Shakespeare scripts for our end of year concert. Thank you and you have made my life so much simpler and stress free.

I love your site! I find it to be extremely helpful, concise, and full of great advice, fun activities, and plenty of resources for any in class activity. I’ve been teaching and directing children’s theater in Portland for the past four years and I can’t believe I’m just finding you now! Thank you for providing such a great resource for teachers everywhere!

I love Drama Notebook! As a first year Theater teacher with no experience, the lessons and games were extremely helpful resources in planning. Not to mention, the kids LOVE the activities! My subscription has been worth every penny!

If you teach theatre to children, Drama Notebook is a must have resource. Janea and her team have created the best online teaching tool for theatre I have found. Drama Notebook made me a better teacher and made lesson planning so much more creative than I could have done on my own. Thanks to Janea and everyone at Drama Notebook. Your work is so important and so helpful. I admire your vision and dedication. You have made a difference in theatre education.

Being a member of Drama Notebook has literally rescued me from all of my curriculum prep stress. I am guaranteed an inspiring, engaging, and exciting lesson without all the internet research. The site is so easy to navigate and is constantly being updated with new, fresh exercises that always keeps my students wanting more. I’ve been a member for over a year and I don’t plan on leaving any time soon! Thank you for saving my lessons from being at risk of repetition, and more importantly, for keeping the teachers inspired so the kids can have a blast!

My experience with Drama Notebook was awesome! Our Middle School recently converted to a charter school and this year all teachers had the chance to teach an experience based learning class. I chose drama to teach to 5th and 6th grade students. Having no prior knowledge or experience in theater or drama, this site was a lifesaver. We loved the games and scripts and enjoyed watching the videos. Thank you Drama Notebook!

I am loving everything about your Winter Tales lesson plan. It’s very organized and easily adaptable to both my 5-7 year-old and 8-10 year-old classes. The children are so excited about the scripts that are included and can’t wait to show off their work in our next showcase. The lesson plan is a life saver for both novice and experienced teachers and I’m looking forward to using more of them in future years. They will save much time in class preparation not to mention my sanity!

Wow Janea- I am blown away by the resources on your site and all the work you have put in to make it all so accessible. I teach Spanish language to elementary school age, and drama is a great way to get students using the language. So many of your guidelines help me to organize a “community of learners” and that safety helps them take the risk of speaking another language. And your activities give me so many ideas for communicating meaning, when so often with a world language the words we are using mean nothing -yet. Your materials have not only enhanced my teaching, but my students are having so much fun! ¡Muchísimas gracias por todo!

I just wanted to say, your website is amazing. I used to be a professional actor for 25 odd years and have only recently entered the teaching profession. I know a lot about drama and how to do it but not necessarily how to teach it to children. I have a lot of passion, but I am a primary school teacher, not a specialist drama teacher. So, I was very relieved to find your website. Thank you and congratulations on a wonderful resource.

Friday I was asked to begin an after-school drama club starting on Monday. I was stressed out, because I want this to be an awesome experience for the kids, as well as me. All worries are gone now that I found this site and all the resources! THANK YOU for sharing!! Now I cannot wait to begin, I feel so prepared.

I wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying your material. This is my 14th year to teach theatre but my first year to teach Special Needs Theatre. I am using your material for younger students and my special needs actors are having a wonderful time! I have am seeing them gain confidence and performance skills. Just wanted you to know that your material works wonderfully with my special sweet students. Thanks for putting these lessons together.

I am in the same position many teachers find themselves in; teaching a class for which they have no definite reference point, curriculum. When I found Drama Notebook, I knew that I had found something that would prove to be of invaluable help to me in this process. I love how the skits and ideas were tied to literature and yet created to resonate with the youth of today. I especially appreciate the specific concepts, ideas and goals which are all so clearly laid out. Honestly, I thought it was too good to be true! Thank you, Janea for all of your hard work and passionate desire to share this wonderful gift.

I have been teaching Creative Drama for three years to preschoolers and 6-9 year olds, with no formal training, relying on my own thought up lessons plans and finding my way…. sometimes successfully, sometimes not! In a moment of desperation for new inspiration, I decided to turn to my faithful friend Google again. Although this time, to my surprise, Drama Notebook popped up! WOW! Finally a website sharing REAL lesson plans! Not just a few but 100’s of ideas! THANK you, thank you Drama Notebook for changing my life!

I’m a first year theater teacher. I’m not trained in theater and just picked it up when our small school lost their previous theater teacher. I was on the web looking for ideas and found this website. It has been a life-saver!!! I have used lessons and information for all kinds of activities all year long. I teach HS but my kids love all the games and activities that I’ve used. I’ve used the 325 games the most. I used them as warm-up and ice breakers at the beginning of the year. Then as the year went on, we used them for fun times. I took the games and numbered them and then when I had a sub, I would tell her to have the students choose a number and that was the game they would play. So many times, they begged for us to play the games. So, I believe that this site is well worth the money that I’m paying out of my own pocket to have access to. I plan to continue using the resources available and am looking forward to the changes and new activities and information added.

I was applying for an upper / lower elementary drama teacher position at a Montessori school and part of the application process was to write a lesson plan inspired by Japan. I was totally stumped! Most of my theater teaching experience had been with high school aged students. I wrote to Janea asking for help. She got back to me that same day and helped me to create a killer lesson plan. Next I had to teach another lesson and get observed. She actually talked to me on the phone, walking me through ideas for a lesson that ended up wow-ing them. I got the job!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. We just wrapped up a 6 week after-school drama club at my children’s elementary school. We try to find appropriate one-act plays for each grade and after our final club meeting, put on a full production for parents with sets, props, costumes, etc. I stumbled upon your site in my search for club material. Through our membership, I was able to find excellent and age-appropriate theater games for our warm-ups (each week we introduced a new theater concept: stage directions, projection, stage business) and we used your lovely ‘A Pirate’s Tale’ script for our 4th graders. It tied in beautifully with our ‘Silly Stories’ theme and was great for that age group. I only wish there had been more complete scripts of that nature to use for our production. Our club funds are gone until next year so we are terminating our current membership but I suspect we’ll be back again next year! Thanks again – wonderful resource.

Drama Notebook has really helped me become a more efficient and organized drama teacher! Before I became a member, it was always hard finding appropriate games and ideas for my classes, but this website gathers them all and categorizes them all in the one place! It really has been a great help and an inspiration for many of my lessons and learning activities! Thank you Drama Notebook 🙂

Drama Notebook has been a lifesaver!!! As an incredibly busy teacher with my own Drama School and Head of Prep Drama at an Independent girls schools (Pipers Corner School, Great Kingshill), I often need an extra ideas or warm-ups. I can honestly say that Drama Notebook has delivered every time. Janea obviously has a passion for everything Drama and I am SO glad she decided to start this website. I have already recommended her to many of my colleagues and will continue to do so. Highly recommend, real value for money, thank you!!

On Janea as a Trainer

As a classroom teacher and trainer for over 25 years I can say with the utmost confidence that Janea Dahl’s drama workshop was the best training I have ever experienced. She thoroughly analyzed our organization’s needs and delivered a series of workshops that quickly empowered even our most reluctant participants to teach drama with enthusiasm. It was an entirely different approach than I had anticipated and I was awed by her compassion, wit and expertise. Additionally, she constructed a plan for implementation and drafted four-year’s worth of custom lesson plans that are being successfully put to use in over 150 AlphaBest locations. I would highly recommend her and her team of teaching artists to any organization wishing to include a drama component!

As a first year teacher of sixth grade language arts, I was told that I would be teaching drama three days before it started. I frantically searched the internet for drama ideas, and was thrilled to find Drama Notebook. There are more ideas here than I have time to look at. The warm up activities and games have been a lifesaver, and tons of fun for the students! And after having personal contact with Janea, I can also say that the people behind Drama Notebook are a pleasure to work with!

Even with sixteen years of experience teaching drama, I constantly find new games and curriculum in the Drama Notebook! It’s an amazingly comprehensive and creative collection of theater activities to use in the classroom or even at home with my own kids!

As a rather “nomadic” arts educator who spends much of her time in vastly different classrooms throughout the city while working with a wide range of students, I often find myself struggling to find time to create comprehensive, thematic lesson-plans that I can utilize in various ways over extended periods of time; Enter: Drama Notebook! This website has become such a valuable resource of detailed, well-organized information that allows me to create structured, yet flexible & creative lessons that I can tailor to meet my students’ interests & needs- no matter their age or experience level may be. I am very pleased with my membership & also love the generous perks offered for special promotions, etc. All that said, “Thank You!” to Janea Dahl & her associates for all of the above…Personally, I (as well as many others, I’m sure) eagerly anticipate whatever fabulous additions await us in the near future!!

I stumbled upon Drama Notebook and I haven’t looked back. I have been teaching Drama for 10 years and yet I have found many cool new activities to try out from the Drama Notebook site. I am impressed with how well organized it is, and that it keeps evolving. I also appreciate the flexibility with the membership. I can leave this website whenever I want, but I am certainly not finished exploring it yet! Thanks Janea, for sharing your passion for teaching drama with me, and providing such wonderful ideas that most certainly add a bunch of awesome tools to my teaching toolbox.

I’ve been teaching for over 35 years and the Drama Notebook curriculum is a gift beyond measure. It is inspiring to have so much material at my fingertips especially when I occasionally run out of steam. I can find something for any age or any background while ensuring that my student’s experiences are fruitful and rewarding. There are tons of original activities that don’t speak down to kids, but empower them while promoting individual growth and creativity. This curriculum rocks!

I started out my drama club in Korea without this program because I come from a theater background. But I faced so many problems based on culture and performance (English ability, saving face, way too many students in the class, etc.). So I checked out Drama Notebook and surprisingly had some really great improvements. I think one of the most useful things for me personally was the idea of auditioning in a different way. It was less stressful for them and they enjoyed it much more. There were also some great activities that were very engaging and helped get results. Overall, I highly recommend this program for teachers regardless of how much past theater experience they have. It was very refreshing for me to be able to see things from a new perspective and made my drama club that much better.

As I don’t have the chance to go peruse book shelves or talk to a colleague regarding my drama class, I have been very thankful to have the resources of Drama Notebook on line to see me through this semester of teaching drama. I live and teach in rural Alaska (no roads to where I live!) and teach all the English and history classes for 6-12th grades. In addition I teach whatever electives are needed, and this semester it was drama which I have never taught before. The ideas for games, skits, Shakespeare plays, pantomimes, and fairy tales have been a gold mine, and I am one week away from our semester being done. Thanks for helping me survive and blossom into a drama teacher!

I have thoroughly enjoyed the drama notebook website this school year. I teach 4-6th grade drama/music for a small private school. The kids have loved all the activities that I have done with them this school year and anticipate what they are going to do each class period. I have recommended this website to several friends as well. Way to go and keep up the great work!

adrienne olmsteadI am a middle school drama teacher and Drama Notebook has been such a life and time saver! All the resources and activities match perfectly with my curriculum for my Acting, Intro to Drama, Theatre Arts, and Improvisation classes! The print and play games are great because they save the time of making the lists-they are ready to go. I love how there always new things to explore, especially the new monologue section! The Facebook page has also been a wonderful new addition–as I check the updates, new ideas are always keeping things fresh. Thanks to Janea and Drama Notebook for making my life easier as a drama teacher and my lessons creative and inspiring!

I discovered Drama Notebook by chance when I was searching for help for a friend who had just been assigned to teach middle school drama. She is a great English teacher but had never taught drama. I read through the offerings in DN and realized my drama class could use a little sprucing up too. We both subscribed and I was able to get some great ideas and new material for my classes. I really appreciate your insight as a drama teacher yourself. Thank you for building such a great source of material for the beginner and the experienced teacher.

Drama Notebook was a HUGE help for me this summer as I was asked to coordinate a summer drama camp. While I have both an BA and an MA in Child Drama, it had been over 25 years since I taught theatre for young children (yes…I am in my 50’s!). I had a program of 30 students ages 5 – 13. Your website was a huge help in getting me to remember what I had not used since I was 26. The camp was a huge success thanks to the resources I found on this site.

I’m 10 minutes into my membership with this site, and already it has changed my life. I’ve been teaching drama for several years now, but after a particularly tough year, I can now feel my enthusiasm returning. I feel so much more prepared – and I’m only in the first section! Thank you. THANK YOU.

I was hired to teach drama at an inner city school in Philadelphia. I had 400 students in 8 different grades. The school environment and behavior issues were pretty extreme and I had gotten to the point where I was ready to give up. In a moment of desperation, I reached out to Janea for help and advice. I was a complete stranger at the time. Not only did she respond immediately, but over the next few months, she talked to me on the phone, emailed me ideas and extra materials, and gave me an amazing amount of support. By the end of the year, I had achieved a seemingly impossible task…I had won the kids over! Most of the behavior issues were under control and I could actually teach. Middle school boys started bowing to me in the hall; and on the last day, the kids gave me a standing ovation! I truly could not have done this without Janea’s guidance, love and encouragement. I’m sure she can’t provide this level of support for every teacher, but this has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my lifetime.

I am teaching drama for the very first time so I took a gamble and joined Drama Notebook sight unseen. It was a gamble worth taking. I LOVE THIS SITE!!! In 30 minutes I have seen enough resources to ensure a fun and exciting program for my students. Thank you.

I’ve been an actor for over 30 years and over the last 2 years I’ve been working with a youth theatre for kids between the ages of 15 and 18. Janea’s personal recommendations to me were really helpful and I felt a lot more secure working with the kids. Her advice, along with the amazing material on this website allows me to have confidence in the lesson plans that I prepare.

Chris Fitzgerald

I love your site! Our school had absolutely no drama curriculum, so Drama Notebook has been a total life saver. Many of the students said they enjoyed the class more than any other they’ve taken. Thank you so much for all of your hard work putting this site together.

As a drama teacher abroad (English native working in Hungary) I am often stuck for ideas as the language barrier creates limitations with regards exercises we can do. Drama Notebook has every drama game and activity under the sun, all arranged in an organized, easy-to-find fashion and written clearly and concisely. I benefited particularly from the movement exercises as they are easy to conduct without having to give too many instructions (easy to ‘show’ rather than explain). I hope to use some of the ESL games with my older students who do know a bit of English already. Overall it gave me a new energy to go back to my lessons with, as things were starting to drag a bit, with the same games over and over. The website is attractive and easy to navigate too!

Ashlee

Just had to say thank you for the amazing drama resource you have created! Without a doubt, you have made my life as a drama teacher so much EASIER! The only problem I have now is, WHICH great idea out of the thousands do I choose? I am signing back up for the new materials! I wish you and all who help to create Drama Notebook tremendous success. I’d hug you if I could!

I’m loving your site! I’ve taught elementary school Drama for the past 5 years, and this is a wonderful way to start the school year. Your site has allowed me to plan and prepare with ease. I own a lot I drama resources, but it’s so nice to have it all at my fingertips, from home and from school. Thank you Janea for providing us with Drama Notebook! I run an after school drama club called POCKET MONEY WORKSHOP for 5-15 year-olds just outside Manchester, UK and I find your site an invaluable resource. I stumbled across DN whilst researching ideas for my classes, but thanks to you, I no longer have to trawl through pages and pages of information to find appropriate material. Everything – and so much more besides – is there in a ‘click’. Love it!

I do not know what I would have done without Drama Notebook. I have had years of training both at University (B.A. Honors Theatre and minor in English) and then three years professional acting training at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. I have performed in front of thousands of people on London’s West End, UK Tours and off West End venues and have taught many classes to all ages, but I still found starting my own teaching business for children incredibly daunting. It is great to have such a comprehensive resource that not only reinforces what I have been teaching but also gives me great new ideas and a strong platform from which to work. Thank you, Janea, for taking the time to ‘get it all down’ and sharing it so generously!

Drama Notebook is the BEST drama site I have ever visited! It is packed-full of incredible games/activities (and so much more); I could not have survived my first year of teaching without it. Every single idea I have used from this website, the kids have loved, and what’s even better, the website is incredibly user-friendly. The activities are explained very well, so it is extremely easy to implement them the same day in the classroom. In addition, each activity has ideas for beginning/middle/and advanced implementation, so no matter what level of drama you teach, this website will work for you! Lastly, the videos are helpful as well; it is so nice to click on a video and see the activity in 3 minutes. I would recommend this website to new teachers and teachers who have taught for years — it’s really that great!

Martha Zimpfer-Suraci

Thank you so much for this incredible website! This is my first year teaching drama and was incredibly overwhelmed by the thought of everything I needed to cover in order to give my students a basic idea of what drama is. Even though I graduated college with a Bachelor’s in Drama, I was having some difficulty thinking of how to communicate the basic principles of acting to my junior high age students. I was so pleased with what I found that I spread the word about you to my fellow educators and now we’re all in love with the awesome resources you’ve provided!”

I have been teaching a class called Musical Theatre for several years now. It is a performance class where we work on acting and singing (musical theatre repertoire). I have spent $100’s on books and materials, but still am always looking for more to improve what I do. This year as I was searching the web for lesson ideas and activities I found Dramanotebook.com. I did the trial membership and it was a “no brainer” to join. I have yet to find a “dud” activity. They are engaging and the kids really respond. I will stay a member as long as I am teaching…for sure!

When our organization decided to add drama to our after-school programs, we performed a thorough search to find a source for materials and training. Drama Notebook stood out as a clearly unique resource. In addition to commissioning Janea to create custom lesson plans for us, we hired her to provide training for our area managers at our yearly retreat. Many participants remarked that it was the best training they had ever experienced. Since then, our organization has continued to implement her lesson-plans in over 250 locations. Not only are the materials easy to use and understand by educators with NO formal drama training, her work has sparked more excitement and parent involvement than I have ever seen. AlphaBEST considers Janea one of our strongest partner’s curriculum development. Our students are always excited to perform and interact with each drama unit Janea provides!

The reason I am writing to you is to express my enormous gratitude for the materials at your site. I was at the position to start something brand new from a scratch and the curriculum that I have found here is filled not only with a lot of experience and expertise, but also with great love for the kids. In autumn I am going back to University to study for a film and theatre director, but what I have learned from your materials will be very useful to us and we will be able to start our drama classes even from the summer as a part of our kid’s camps. So, thank you once again for sharing your knowledge!

I led a Drama camp at my church for a week last summer. Your Drama Notebook resources were so valuable to me. I used many of the drama games from your website. The kids had a blast! One of their homework assignments was to create a character complete with costume and a short monologue. It was very entertaining! Our week of Drama Camp ended with the children leading our evening worship service. I was like a proud mama! Thank you for the resources given in the Drama Notebook. It is a well-organized resource and I found it extremely helpful!!!

Drama Notebook was a fantastic find on the internet for me. I love the professional and arty layout of the site as well as the wonderful variety of content. Janea and the gang have been extremely helpful and are so personable. I have recently begun my own drama school and found the vast array of printouts, lesson plans etc. as well as the videos, one of my most valuable resources. I highly recommend this site to anyone like myself who might be ‘starting from scratch’. And what’s more, it is very affordable. Thank you Drama Notebook team!

Drama Notebook curriculum has been invaluable to my career. I have been teaching/directing drama for 13 years, and while I have a lot of teaching ideas, I was feeling burned out on some of it. Many thanks and keep ’em coming!
