21 physical comedy gags for Commedia dell’arte and more!

Lazzi is the plural of the Italian word lazzo, which means “joke.” Lazzi are essentially “gags” or stock jokes that can be added to a Commedia dell’arte play or performance to ensure the comic action keeps pace. The lazzi were unique to each character (although not to each acting troupe) yet familiar enough to be recognizable. They could be a comic phrase or physical gesture; the desired result was always a laugh from the audience.

This tutorial gives you step-by-step instructions for introducing the concept of lazzi to your older elementary, middle school, and high school students. It includes modern examples, links to classic gag bits from film and television, simple lazzi warm-up activities, a bonus handout as homework, and 21 themed lazzi.

Example:

THE COWARDS
(2 actors) Two characters want to fight. They flex, stretch, boast, and confidently taunt their opponent in the buildup. But when the fight actually begins, they both weep, scream in terror, and beg for mercy from one another.
