Students will have a blast becoming immediate ‘experts’ on both funny and serious subjects. In this activity, students randomly draw a suggestion from a hat; they must immediately give a one-minute speech on the topic as if they are an expert on the subject. There are 32 funny suggestions and 32 serious topics laid out on the pages so that they are easy to print out, cut apart and put in a hat. Also included are two more ways to adapt or vary the activity.
‘Experts’ is somewhat of a classic improv game and many instructors may have played this before. On Drama Notebook, however, the actual suggestions (many more than you will need) are included. This is one of the things that sets Drama Notebook apart from other drama resources. Typically, there is a short description of how to play a game, but important details, such as the actual suggestions or prompts are missing, leaving the instructor to either make his/her own list, or to brainstorm in the moment. On Drama Notebook, the prompts are provided for you, saving you time and leaving you free to focus on paying attention to the progress of individuals or the group.
Examples of funny topics:
- Swatting a fly
- Walking and chewing gum at the same time
Examples of serious topics:
- Egyptian pyramids
- The plague
