16 self-esteem activities to use in drama class. These activities can dramatically change the way your students feel about themselves and their classmates.

Are you working with teens who have suddenly become self-conscious? Or are you working with a particular group that is having trouble building trust with one another? One of the major goals of drama is to help students accept themselves just as they are. Creating an atmosphere of supportiveness and trust in the group is a key step in this process. Once that is established, here are some great activities/ideas to help students feel really good about themselves.

Here is an example of a self-esteem activity for drama class:

Gift Giving

Students take turns giving imaginary gifts to other students in class. Each person could draw the name of another person out of a hat, or each person could give a gift to the person on his/her right. The pantomimed gifts should be thought out so they represent the individuals who receive the gifts. The gifts may be deep and thoughtful such as “courage to face life’s difficulties”, for someone who has shared many deep problems with the group. Or the gifts may simply be something the receiver would enjoy, such as “a season ski pass to go skiing any time you want,” for someone who enjoys skiing. When giving the gifts, the giver should explain what the gift is and why she or he chose to give that particular gift to the individual.

Ask!

How did you decide what gifts to give?
What did you think about the gifts you got?
Do you think there was a good match between the people and the gifts they received?
