Fun, easy way to teach the concept of subtext! Ten pages. Ages 10 and up.

Subtext is the meaning under the dialogue. It is the unspoken thoughts of characters – what the characters really think and believe. It is also the ideas that occur to them and prompt them to act or speak.

The Lesson Includes:
  • Easy teacher’s script for you to use to introduce the concept.
  • Instructions for the activity.
  • THIRTY-FIVE different lines, each with two suggestions for subtext. This is enough for 35 students to try the exercise with no repeats.

Example of one line with two different subtext suggestions:

LINE: When are we leaving?
SUBTEXT: I’m dying of boredom.

LINE: When are we leaving?
SUBTEXT: I’m so excited!
