The Christmas Cookie Caper
By Jennifer Reif
It's Christmas Eve, and Elfie-the Lead Elf-gathers everyone to review the final checklist before Santa's big journey. The set should feature a kitchen counter where Santa's Baker Elves prepare Christmas cookies. Additional workstations can be included, but the kitchen counter should be the main focal point. Elfie enters first with a clipboard in hand.
Elfie: Alright, elves, gather round! Let's bring it in- We're minutes away from go-time. Let's run through our final checklist before the big night. Eyes up, ears open, and let's make this our best Christmas Eve yet!
All Elves: Adlibs and Cheers
Elfie: Let's start with the toys. Tinsel and Tinker. What do you have to report?
Tinsel: We have some terrific toys this year!
Tinker: Top tier!
Tinsel: Trucks, T-rexes, Trampolines...
Tinker: Those things are not easy to wrap.
Elfie: Well done, toymakers. Speaking of wrapping, Glitter and Giggles, how is the gift wrapping going?
Glitter: Great!
Giggles: Got it all done.
Glitter: Gotta love the green paper.
Giggles: Gorgeous!
Elfie: Speaking of gorgeous, Sparkle and Snowflake, how is Santa's sleigh coming along?
Sparkle: Ship shape.
Snowflake: She's all tuned up.
Sparkle: Shiny and shimmery.
Snowflake: Should be ready to go.
Elfie: Good job, mechanics. Speaking of being ready to go, Rudy and Ralphie, how are the reindeer?
Rudy: Really good.
Ralphie: Rested.
Rudy: Refreshed.
Ralphie: Ready for the journey.
Elfie: Well done, reindeer wranglers. Now, speaking of journeys, Nutmeg and Nova. Are you ready to navigate?
Nutmeg: Naturally.
Nova: Never been more ready.
Nutmeg: Nothing stopping us.
Nova: New moon is gonna look sweet tonight!
Elfie: Nice to know! Speaking of sweet, Buddy and Buttons, how are the baked goods?
Buddy: Brilliant!
Buttons: Burnt a few early on… but…
Buddy: Besides that, best batch ever!
Buttons: We're bringing the magic this year.
Elfie: Great work, everyone! This is exactly what teamwork at the North Pole looks like. Thanks to your efforts, this will be the best Christmas ever!
All Elves: Cheers
Elfie: Easy now, we'll celebrate later. There's not much time left before takeoff. Let's get those Christmas cookies out here to kick the magic into motion.
Buddy: Coming right up!
(Buddy and Buttons begin looking for the cookies. The focus remains on Elfie. )
Elfie: For those of you who are new this year, we have a very important tradition here at the North Pole. Before the big night begins, we all gather to celebrate our hard work, and Santa declares, "The first cookie of Christmas!" (Said slowly and dramatically like the famous line in the movie, The Polar Express, "The first gift of Christmas!")
(Elves quietly show their excitement and anticipation.)
Elfie: Now, Buddy and Buttons, where are those cookies?
(All focus shifts to Buddy and Buttons, who have discovered the cookies are missing. They do a double take and say together… )
Buddy and Buttons: They're gone!
Elfie: What?
Buddy: The cookies are gone!
Buttons: Someone stole Santa's cookies!
All Elves: Lots of commotion
Elfie: Hold on now! Let's not jump to conclusions. Where did you leave them?
Buddy: Right here in this box.
Buttons: Just like we do every year.
Elfie: Let's retrace your steps.
Buddy: Okay. We gathered all the ingredients.
Buttons: We mixed everything together.
Buddy: We rolled out the dough.
Buttons: We cut out the cookies.
Buddy: We baked them in the oven.
Buttons: We let them cool.
Buddy: We frosted them.
Buttons: We added sprinkles.
Buddy: We put them in this box.
Buttons: And now they're gone.
(All elves react)
Tinsel: Who would steal Santa's cookies?
Tinker: I don't know, but we don't have a lot of time to figure it out.
Glitter: What are we going to do?
Giggles: How about a quick search?
Elfie: Good idea, Giggles. Everyone, search high and low! We've got to find those cookies. Ready, set, go!
(Play a piece of lively instrumental music as the elves search for the cookies. A fun time for creative movement, dance, or physical comedy. Elfie should exit at this time.)
(Finally, they all return empty-handed except Elfie, who is waiting off stage to re-enter with Eddie.)
Buddy: Any luck?
All Elves: Adlibs: No, Not me, Etc.
Sparkle: What are we going to do? We can't postpone Christmas.
Snowflake: Can you make more cookies?
Buddy: There's no time for that. It takes hours.
Buttons: And we used up all the ingredients.
Rudy: Maybe Santa won't notice.
Ralphie: Won't notice? Christmas cookies kick off the whole event.
Nutmeg: You're right, Ralphie. It's a tradition. A ritual.
Nova: No cookies. No Christmas.
All Elves: Adlibs: Gasps, Sighs, Sadness, etc.
Elfie: (Entering) Hold on, everyone. We can't let that happen. I think I know what to do.
All Elves: Adlibs: What? Tell us, Etc.
Elfie: My cousin Eddie. (Gestures to Eddie, who enters. All Elves look confused.) He's the official North Pole Detective. (Elves seem impressed. They didn't know there was an official detective.)
Eddie: Nobody goes anywhere until we solve this Christmas cookie caper.
Buttons: Wait a minute. Do you think one of us is the culprit?
Eddie: We can't rule anyone out.
Elfie: Eddie is here to investigate, so everyone needs to cooperate.
Eddie: Thank you, Elfie. Everyone, please take a seat.
(Elves sit. Another option is to have the elves leave the stage. You could change the line to "All of you can step outside, and Elfie will bring you in when I need you." )
Eddie: Now, where are the bakers?
Raise their hands and stand.
Eddie: I understand you two made some cookies this morning, and now they are missing.
Buddy: That's right.
Eddie: What kind of cookies?
Buttons: Sugar cookies with frosting and sprinkles.
Eddie: What's so special about these cookies?
Buddy: They're Santa's favorite.
Buttons: We've used a secret recipe for generations.
Buddy: It came from our great, great, great, great, great, great grand-elf, Nana. ("Nana" said with a touch of nostalgia. They both smile sweetly.)
Buttons: When Santa takes the first bite, Christmas begins.
Buddy: He always says…
Buddy and Buttons: "The first cookie of Christmas." (Slowly and dramatically, imitating Santa.)
Eddie: I see. And when was the last time you saw these cookies?
Buddy: This morning. Right after we put them in the special box.
Eddie: Very well. Don't go anywhere. I might have more questions.
Buddy and Buttons: Yes, sir. (They sit)
