Long before humans understood the scientific explanation for many things in the world, people invented legends and myths to explain everyday phenomenon. There are thousands of stories that provide fanciful explanations for everyday phenomenon such as why the sun rises in the east and sets in the west and how the stars came to be in the sky.
This South American myth tells the story of why toads are bumpy and have terrible voices. Many of these stories not only provide explanations, but also teach a lesson, and this story is no different. Toad got his bumps because he tricked Vulture.

Scene
A grassy field, and a party in the sky.
Narrator One: One day Toad was hopping home when he ran into Vulture who looked as if he was going somewhere.
Toad: Where are you going, Vulture?
Vulture: There is going to be a great concert in the sky, organized by the full moon itself. All of the birds were invited.
Toad: I wish I had wings, then the very heavens would echo with the sound of my singing.
Vulture: I’ve prepared a special song. I’m bringing my guitar.
Toad: That makes me want to go even more!
Vulture: I’ll tell you all about it when I get back Toad.
Toad: So long.
(Vulture exits stage right, and Toad starts hopping stage left.)
Narrator Two: Toad hopped sadly down the trail, but then he had an idea. He snuck back to Vulture’s house.
