Unintent-One-act Play Script

Unintent is a short one-act play about a middle-aged doctor and his attempt to save a dying man. Gene is a cardiologist who rushes to save a young man who has been in a terrible car accident. When the young man dies, Gene is charged with manslaughter. Memories of the treatment of his dying wife return and he is overcome with guilt. Adults and teens will enjoy performing in this heartbreaking drama with a shocking ending!

Ryan Morris is from Dryden, VA. Only member in his family to be heavily involved in theatre. He has spent many years in Governors school for theatre production. Later, Morris became Vice President and later after that, President of the Theatre club at Alice Lloyd College. As a senior in high school, Morris wrote the school play for the one act competition. The play was very successful in the competition and Morris was also voted to the VA Conference 40 All-Star Cast team two years in a row. His plays range from dark dramas to comedies. Always keeping things exciting and fresh.

CAST OF CHARACTERS

DOCTOR – Gene Patterson,middle-aged man, cardiologist.
MELISSA – Young woman who works for Dr. Patterson at the front desk of the office.
DAVID – Young man who is seriously injured.
DETECTIVE HAMELS – Homicide detective. (gender flexible)
DETECTIVE LYNCH: Homicide detective. (gender flexible)
MRS. HANKS – Elderly woman, David’s mother.
BUTCH – Middle aged, Dr. Patterson’s lawyer.
STRANGER – Young man who rushes David into Dr. Patterson’s office.
POLICE OFFICER – Middle aged man who stands guard for Dr. Patterson and Mrs. Hanks.
BECKY – Young woman, patient of Dr. Patterson.
RESCUE SQUAD MEMBER(S) – Help David get to the hospital. (gender flexible)

ACT I Scene 1: Doctor’s Office

(Doctor enters stage left; Melissa is sitting at the check in desk.)

MELISSA
Good morning, Dr. Patterson!

DOCTOR
Good morning, Melissa! How was your weekend?

MELISSA
It was wonderful! My husband and I got to take the boys to their first amusement park. They had such a great time. They went on their first roller coaster and everything!

DOCTOR
Nice! Were they scared any?

MELISSA
Well, they were at first. But they got over it and had a blast!

DOCTOR
Well that is wonderful. Not as wonderful as that smile though.

MELISSA
Oh, doctor. You’re too sweet. Thank you.

DOCTOR
You know, you remind me a lot of my wife. I wish you could have met her. She was… amazing. Your husband and family are very lucky to have you.

MELISSA
Stop it. You’re going to make me cry. Thank you.

DOCTOR
You’re very welcome. So, how’s our schedule look for today?

MELISSA
Well, let’s see here. You only have Becky in the morning and then 3 in the afternoon. Not too bad.

DOCTOR
Nah. Not bad at all. When is Ms. Becky coming in?

MELISSA
About 10 minutes from now.

DOCTOR
Alright; good deal. Just have her come back when she arrives.

MELISSA
You got it, boss.

DOCTOR
Thank you. (exits stage left)

(Blackout.)

scene 2: Doctor’s Office

(Melissa at front desk; Doctor and Becky enter stage left.)

DOCTOR
Now remember, Ms. Becky, two tablets every eight hours. It should help with those chest pains and get that heart and blood pressure back on track.

BECKY
Thank you so much, Doctor. When should I see you again?

DOCTOR
Only if your symptoms get worse or if you need a refill. Other than that, I’ll see you at your regular check-up in the spring. Mrs. Parks will check you out and you’ll be free to go.

BECKY
Thanks, Doctor.

DOCTOR
My pleasure. You have a wonderful day. Tell your mom I said hi! (doctor exits stage left)

(Melissa hands Becky a clipboard.)

MELISSA
Alright, just sign here and that’ll do it.

BECKY
Thank you so much, darling.

MELISSA
You’re welcome! You have a great day.

BECKY
You, too. (Becky exits stage right)

(Doctor enters stage left.)

DOCTOR
You said that was our only morning patient?

MELISSA
Yes, sir. Jake comes in right after lunch.

DOCTOR
Alright; good deal. (Doctor takes off jacket) Say, did I tell you about this jacket?

MELISSA
I’ve always noticed you wear it every day. I’ve never not seen you in it at work before. Most doctors who have their own office just wear casual clothes.

DOCTOR
When I was in med school, this was my lab jacket. That’s when I met my wife.

MELISSA
Really?! So you wear it in remembrance of her?
