SCENE 1
NARRATOR
Once, not so long ago, in a world filled with fairies and goblins and things most people don’t believe in these days, a mother in Ireland was reading her daughter Alice a story about
Paris.
MOM
Once upon a time in a city called Paris, there was a fine baker who baked the best cupcakes in the world. People would come from everywhere just to taste her fine cupcakes.
ANNA THE BAKER
That’s me, Bonjour, I’m Anna the baker. My shop is on Rue de Baguette. I make fine French breads, too.
ALICE
Oh, Mommy, Paris sounds so lovely. I can almost smell it.
MOM
You have such an imagination. There was also a fashion designer, who had a shop down the street.
MADAME ANTOINETTE
It’s Moi, I am Madame Antoinette and I’m the dressmaker. It’s my dream to be the best designer at Paris Fashion Week and sell something to a big celebrity.
ARSENE LUPIN
And then there is Moi. Je suis Arsene Lupin. I am the Villain Dans cette histoire.
POLICE COMMISSIONER
And I am the police. Here to keep order.
SKYLAR STARR
I’m Skylar Starr reporting from Paris with my pet pink pig named Oink.
PIG/OINK
Oink!
SKYLAR STARR
I’m a journalist working my way up. Here is the news!!! What’s new in Paris today? Well, there is a big fashion event that the city is very excited about. The event will take place in the Louvre and all of Paris is buzz!!
ALICE
Mommy, what is the Louvre?
MOMMY
The Louvre is a famous museum in Paris, and it holds the Mona Lisa painting.
SKYLAR STARR
I’m here at the bakery of Anna de Cupcake, the best baker in Paris. Anna is preparing her famous cupcakes for the event. I personally love her cupcakes and I eat them every morning for strength. I know that’s a lot of sugar, but they really are delicious. What are you doing that is special this year?
ANNA THE BAKER
This year I am putting a special swirl on the cupcakes and in every batch, one cupcake will have a special surprise.
A man walks in with a cloak on his head.
MAN
I would like the cupcake with the special surprise.
ANNA THE BAKER
You can’t just have it. These are for Paris Fashion Week. It’s very expensive, sir.
MAN
Muh ha. You will be sorry you didn’t just give it to me.
ANNA THE BAKER
That is very strange. Oh look, there is a little mouse where the man was just standing.
SKYLAR STARR
Hhhh. Look at this, Anna, it’s a rainbow mouse. And it’s all slimy. And there are green mice footprints. Do you think this has anything to do with all the mice in Paris these days?
ANNA THE BAKER
Well, someone has been stealing my cupcakes. I must be going.
She is turned into a mouse.
Squeak!
SKYLAR
Did you just say squeak?!
ARSENE LUPIN
They don’t see me because I am invisible. But I am here, and I WILL have the best cupcakes! And now she is a mouse. Poor little mouse.
ANNA THE BAKER (As a mouse)
Squeak.
She runs off.
SKYLAR STARR
Mouse?! Anna! Wait. Don’t go.
ANNA THE BAKER
Ahhh! Squeek. Squeek.
SKYLAR STARR
Everyone these days is afraid of being turned into a mouse. And you saw it, Anna de Cupcake was just turned into a mouse. On camera. Wait, where is Oink? My pig is gone!! Someone turned Anna de Cupcake into a mouse and whoever it was also stole my pet pig Oink!!
MOM
Okay, that’s enough book for now, Alice. Time for bed.
ALICE
But I want more. I need to know why the people were being turned into mice, and what about Skylar’s Pet Pig?
MOM
We can finish it tomorrow. For now, go to bed. Goodnight darling.
ALICE
But I just can’t sleep a wink. I’m just going to open this book and look at the pictures of Paris. I just want to go to Madame de Cupcake’s shop. I want to climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower and take a boat down the Seine. And what is the Louvre? How exciting. (Yawn) I’m so sleepy.
NARRATOR
It was then that Alice heard French bells and some French words. Maybe she was dreaming, and maybe it was real.
ARSENE LUPIN (Whispering)
Bonjour Alice. I will give you this petite macaron. Then you can join us in Paris. You can help me to rule the world. Muh ha ha.
NARRATOR
In the morning when she woke, she found a tiny letter and a petite Macaroon.
ALICE
It’s a tiny letter. What does it say?
ARSENE LUPIN
Dear Alice, eat me, and all your dreams of Paris will come true. Arsene Lupin.
ALICE
Delicious. Yummy. Oh, who is this Arsene Lupin? I feel funny. I’m so sleepy. Back to sleep I go.
ARSENE LUPIN
Go to sleep. Muh ha ha.
NARRATOR
Then out of the book, a fancy lady arrived.
DRESS MAKER ANTOINETTE
Oh no! The villain has already been here. I must do something. I will leave her this beautiful dress with a touch of magic so she will come by the shop to save us all.
ALICE
The next morning, I woke up to find myself in a little wooden bed. This was definitely not my bed that I slept in every night. It was much different. It had a little pillow with pictures of baguettes on it. The room was different too. For starters, it was much smaller than my room. The kitchen, bedroom, and living room were all squished together into one room. There wasn’t even a dining room! Even though my room wasn’t the same I had to at least be in Ireland, but I was wrong. When I got out of bed and went to the window to look out of it, I saw the Eiffel Tower. Suddenly a tingle of excitement took over me. I was in Paris!
NARRATOR
And then a little mouse went running by.
ANNA/MOUSE
Squeak.
ALICE
I love mice. I can talk to mice. Hello, little mouse.
MOUSE
Huh? I’m busy.
ALICE
Where are you going little mouse? And why are you carrying so much material? Excuse me? Madame Mouse?
MOUSE
I can’t talk to you… I will get in trouble. We must work. I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date. Did you get the baguette I gave you? I’ve got to go.
ALICE
What? Excuse me? Did she go down the drain? Mouse!!! That’s strange. Paris looks beautiful, but where are all the people? It seems as if I am just seeing mice. I walked down Rue de Fancy Place where I saw the most beautiful dress shop. And there was a woman inside. A real person. So, I walked in.
MADAME ANTOINETTE
Bonjour. What can I get you?
ALICE
Oh, I love this green dress. I wish I could afford it.
MADAME ANTOINETTE
I am preparing for Paris Fashion Week at the Louvre. Oh Alice, come in. I do love the dress you are wearing, there is so much to be done.
ALICE
How do you know my name?
MADAME ANTOINETTE
I’m Madame Antoinette. Don’t I look familiar to you? Come in, girl. I am the best dress designer in Paris, and I’ve lost so many of my models. They’ve been turned into mice. I don’t have any actual people to wear my dresses during Fashion Week. You must be responding to the sign on the door that says: “Models Wanted!” “Real People.”
ALICE
Oh? Me? You want me to be a model for Paris Fashion Week?
MADAME ANTOINETTE
Oui. Now shut the door and come in. Can you sew?
ALICE
Me? Sew? Why yes, I do know how to sew.
MADAME ANTOINETTE
Shhh. Now shut the door.
